About Abigail

My name is Abigail – I’m a recent graduate from Carleton’s Undergraduate Economics program as a University Medal recipient. During my studies, I conducted research on youth financial literacy through the Carleton Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (CUROP), presented a monetary policy recommendation alongside a team of students to the Central Bank’s governing council, and authored a senior thesis on monetary policy, inequality, and housing. Upon completing my degree, I began a year-long contract as a research assistant at the Bank of Canada. After gaining some work experience, I plan on pursuing a PhD in economics.

I am interested in learning about how changes in the macroeconomy impact different groups of people. For instance, it’s well known that an increase in the policy rate decreases aggregate consumption. However, in experiencing that same interest rate change, a poor homeowner may have to give up their home because they can no longer afford the mortgage payments, whereas a more affluent family may be able to dip into their savings and not have to sacrifice their consumption at all. Ultimately, I hope to pursue research that informs policy with a focus on people, instead of only the aggregate figures.

Section 1: Academics

What was Abigail’s general approach to studying?

“One of my best study approaches was with my friend where we would try to go through the material together.”

Abigail used a variety of approaches to study

  • She would go through her notes and make sure she could derive each result.
  • She would retrieve major topics and write them on a separate paper for memorization.

What was Abigail’s workflow?

“I went to office hours every week. Before office hours, I would go through the assignment questions and figure out which questions looked the identical to the ones done in the class, try to understand the proof myself, and then identify the lines where I got stuck.”

  • For classes with slides:
    • Abigail would write verbatim in class what the professor was saying and then use the slides and notes to study afterwards
  • For classes without slides:
    • Abigail would use notebooks and coloured pens.
    • A certain colour such as pink would denote the thoughts that she made or any questions that she had.
